"I Will Not Cry" - solo act by Lushin Dubey directed by Arvind Gaur

Director Arvind Gaur’s new play, "I Will Not Cry", solo act by Lushin Dubey focusses on the issue of increasing number of child deaths in our country.

‘I WILL NOT CRY’
solo play by Lushin Dubey,
directed & scripted by Arvind Gaur
on 23rd nov at 6pm at Sri Ram Centre, Safdar Hashmi Marg,Mandi House.
presented by Save the Children
the play is an exceptional blend of theatre and multimedia, highlighting the issue of child survival ...through satire and music excerpts.it will bring alive the sad truth of millions of unnecessary deaths of children in our country. It hopes to evoke our collective responsibility, as a nation, to act together.

Director's Note -
“The child deaths in India are most alarming and shocking situation. India has unofficially become the world’s child death capital, over 5,000 children die in the country every day ,due to totally preventable causes like diarrhoea, pneumonia and birth related complications.Every 15 seconds, a kid is dying and over four lakh newborns die within the first 24 hours of birth every year, which is the highest anywhere in the world,But sadly and shockingly, this is not a priority for us.The priorities of our economic policies are changing and children figure nowhere there. Schemes, plans and funds are there but they don't reach their destination.Ultimately, it all boils down to corruption.

The objective of this the play is not just to stir and sensitise the audience about to the shocking and shameful number of child deaths in our country, but to also alert them to introspect on their social responsibility towards the issues,”

Street play "Corruption" directed by Arvind Gaur at Indian Habitat Centre

Bhrastachar street play directed by Arvind Gaur
from 22nd Nov 2011 to 24th Nov at 8.30pm
Indian Habitat Center, Lodhi road, Delhi, New Delhi, India
performed by Asmita Theatre Group.
Short and Sweet festival 2011
About the play-
In this play we try to aware the audience effect of corruption in our daily social and political life. This play is not just a play it’s a social awareness initiative from our side because we believe theatre can change, create awareness and can be used for betterment of society.
In the play we show the pain of a common man, the struggle one faces because of corruption. We believe that if we want a change in society we should be prepared for a dialogue.
Our Indian political system has become synonymous with Corruption. How does Corruption affect our Daily life? Well, the common man has to run from pillar to post to get his small jobs done, jobs like obtaining a driving license, passport, water connection, school admission, basic medical facilities. Corruption deep rooted in our system so badly that he is forced to pay bribes during birth and obtaining Death certificates.
In our play we depict an Auction where we show corrupt system its social-economical practices
We have a Great Indian Auction taking place all over the country. At this Auction the Indian system offers you everything under the Blue Sky. One can buy- Politicians Integrity, Houses given to war widows, Coffins of Kargil soldiers and even the Judicial system is effected by corruption.

Govt agencies are ineffective to control the corruption in the system. Some corrupt politicians misuse their powers and arm twist the system to their own benefits. Inspite of the Corruption/Criminal charges not only they roam scott free but also manage to reach the parliament and further dupe the common man.The common man has accepted corruption as part of their life and adjusted to live with it.

Its been 64 yrs since we got our Independence. Agreed India is shining but the picture on the other side of the coin is ugly. Poverty is widespread in India, with the nation estimated to have a third of the world's poor. According to a 2005 World Bank estimate, 41.6% of the total Indian population falls below the international poverty line of US$ 1.25 a day.
The 2011 Global Hunger Index (GHI) Report ranked India 15th, amongst leading countries with hunger situation. It also places India amongst the three countries where the GHI between 1996 and 2011 went up from 22.9 to 23.7% and it is here that we have scams like Uttar Pradesh Food Grain Scam- 2 Lakh crore, 2G Scam worth Rs-176 lakh crore: Commonwealth Games Scam – 60,000 crs and many more.

Our existing judicial system does not have a strong law against Corruption. We need a strong law which the Jan Lokpal bill proposes. The Lokpal Bill proposes to speed up the trial process of the corrupt, freezing their bank A/C’s and confiscating their property. It proposes to deal with Corruption in our country at all levels.
We want the Janlok pal Bill to be passed in the parliament. We hope for better life and a clean system of our future coming generation.

It’s NOW or NEVER

Ashok Lal's -Ek Mamooli Aadmi"
directed by Arvind Gaur
7th November 2011 at 6.30pm
at Tagore Auditorium, Chandigarh

Actors-

Music by Dr. Sangeeta Gaur

About the play-
Ek Mamooli Aadmi' underlines those features of an urban middle class setting which make the yearning for real happiness an agonizing experience. The play also accentuates the contours of a system in which even biological relations are bound to breed loneliness and family becomes fatal to an individual.Ishwar Chand Awasthi, the protagonist, is to die soon and this fact makes him realise that it was not life that he led so far, it was death, unnoticed and unannounced. The perception of this death animates him and he turns to be the source of others' happiness- an extraordinary asset to life and society.

Critics says
'Ek Mamooli Aadmi' is one more milestone in Asmita's engaging repertoire of meaningful theatre.
- Nikhat Kazmi (Times of India)
Meaningful production.. .Another feather in the cap of a young director Arvind Gaur.
- Kavita Nagpal (H T)
'Ek Mamooli Aadmi' is an excellent play with a lot of humou , lot of life's reality
- Smita Nirula (Pioneer)
The play is built around the protagonist Umesh's curiosity to find out why Brahmins had refused to participate in his father's 'tehrvi' ... production is excellent... innovative...
- Romesh Chander (Hindu)
Written by Ashok Lal and directed by Arvind Gaur (अरविन्द गौड़), the play is a deeply moving description of the travails of a middle-aged clerk who knows of his impending death. Reserved, reclusive and politically correct Ishwar Chand, decides to do some unusual things before dying. The acts are not a result of angst or deeds of rebellion, Ishwar just wants to savour another life, paint a new picture of himself for his own viewing. His escape from reality is a challenge to that very reality. Death becomes a motivation for pleasure; he wants to please others, see others happy, and make others fulfilled
- Indian Express

Director's Note
For Asmita Theatre, a new production has always been a part of a process – a fresh chance to react within ourselves and our society, to explore new dimensions in theatre – our choice of socially relevant themes being an extension of this goal. 'Ek Mamooli Aadmi' started off as an exercise to explore ways of using time and space to convey the underlying theme.
During this process we discovered various aspects of our society as it stands today, under the shadow of a consumerist culture, where the base of many a relationship is superficial and the individual is often left with a feeling of loneliness and existential angst- yet often indifferent and unwilling to make a change.
As this play exposes the political and social attitudes and priorities of our society on a smaller canvas such as that of the family and workplace, my actors were involved in an intensive process of looking at their immediate world both inner and outer, with a fresh perspective.
Many a moment in 'Ek Mamooli Aadmi' rose out of much debate and discussion. I hope that this play makes relevant and positive contribution – as t has to us and puts forth a fresh set of questions that we may ask of our society and ourselves.

The Unknown Citizen'
Poem by W H Auden

"Our researches into public opinion are content
That he helped the proper opinion for the time of year
When there was peace he was for peace
When there was war he went
He was married and added five children to the population ;
Which our eugenist says was the right number for a parent of his generation
And our teachers report that he never interfered with their education
Was he free? Was he happy?
The question is absurd
Had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard."
