Theatre Group Celebrates 20th Year of Socio-Political Relevant Theatre.

About the play When respect is denied to a man for the only reason that he is borne by 'low-caste' parents, the offence cannot simply be termed as a social violence. It assumes larger proportions of crime against humanity and society at large. Yet by the turn in situation the murderer becomes a win...ner whereas the victim is unforgiving. The culprit may receive severe punishment at the hands of the law but, in fact, it is the society which is put in the docks. Court Martial, written by Swadesh Deepak, is a story of recruit Ram Chander who is tried for murdering one of his officers and injuring another.
The Court Martial is presided by a war veteran. Col Surat Singh who has witnessed many 'life –and –death' situation. But this trial puts him in a queer position, so far unknown to him, and during the course of interrogation he realize that the issues at stake are much larger than what meets the eye. Realizing that the Indian army is the only government agency in which reservation on caste basis is not permissible. Court Martial presents a combination of legal and poetic justice.

Actors-BajrangBali Singh,Shilpi Marwaha,Shiv Chauhan,Gaurav Mishra,Rahul Khanna,Himanshu Maggo,Suraj Singh,Ishwak Singh,Mannu Chaudhary,Manoj Yadav,Abhishek Pandey, Palak Bhutani,Vivek sharma,Nisha,Ashish,Kunal Sharma,Shiv Kanungo,Shubham, Praveen,Devendar Bisht,Prabhakar Pandey,Prashant Pundir, and Others...

"Not Just a Play: ‘Court Martial’ is not just a play written by Swadesh Deepak, directed by Arvind Gaur & enacted by Asmita-artistes. It is a burning truth of the Indian Society. Sensing that Indian Army is the only government institution, which does not permit caste-based reservations, ‘Court Martial’ presents a mixture of natural and legal justice, which is not only the truth of the Indian Army, but that of the whole Indian Society. That, despite all his qualifications, an individual is traumatised because of his low-caste origins is not merely social violence, but a crime against humanity. The monotony of the long court-trial was pre-empted by the seasoned performance of the Asmita artistes. This Asmita-presentation has proved to be a soothing experience, after many years, for Swadesh Deepak who created a countrywide flutter through this play. "Excellent acting, live and memorable…..worth visit.

Ramkali"
Adaptation of Bertolt Brecht 's play - "The Good Person of Szechwan"
in Hindi By Amitabh Srivastava,Lyrics By Piyush Mishra,
Music by Dr.Sangeeta Gaur,14th July , 7:00pm
At Sri Ram Centre, Safdar Hashmi Marg, Mandi House, New Delhi.
Shilpi Marwaha as Ramkali...
About play Ramkali-...
It raises core issues facing today’s world, of greed versus common good, of the value of right and wrong, of the pressures society puts on people which drive them to committing wrongs to keep up with expectations, the exploitation of goodness and of good people by an aspiring society, and the question of equating theft and wrong doing out of need with that done out of greed.
It is said that between the battle of wrong and right, it is truth that wins, yet ladies and gentlemen, the truth in this play is yet to be discovered… so if you think it has been some time since you’ve done a good deed, think again… maybe not. May be we all have been Ramkali, doing “the right thing’ in the wrong place or vice versa ! Still having second thoughts?

- To those born later
You who will emerge from the flood
Which we have gone under.
Remember When you speak of our failings
The dark time too Which you have escaped.
For we went, changing countries oftener than our shoes
Through the wars of the classes, despairing
When there was injustice only,
and no rebellion.
Think of us…
- Brecht

Rajesh Kumar's play-
Ambedkar Aur Gandhi
directed by Arvind Gaur
on 28th jan 2012 at 6.30 pm
LTG audi,Mandi House
Natsamrat Theatre Festival

UNSUNI,play at The Millennium School, Noida on 25th January 2012,based on Harsh Mander’s book Unheard Voices,Scripted by Mallika Sarabhai

UNSUNI,play at The Millennium School, Noida on 25th January 2012,based on Harsh Mander’s book Unheard Voices,Scripted by Mallika Sarabhai,Directed by Arvind Gaur
About The Play- Unsuni is a socially relevant and politically deep script by Mallika Sarabhai, based on the Novel "Unheard Voices" by Harsh Mander. In a Society where the success of a handful makes bigger news than the misery of millions, a set of 5 monologues dares to speak out for the mute, the desolate, the chronically ignored a woefully unloved India, full of People but starved of life.
Unsuni lifts the veil around harsh realities faced by the diversity afflicted people of our country. Street urchins abandoned by society to fend for themselves in the face of adversity; tribal people forced to surrender their honour to repacious land grabbers; scavengers and lepers who have never known the meaning of human dignity are some specific problems addressed by the play. The volatile nature of religious politics coupled with an incompetent judicial structure is also portrayed with grave honesty. In the depiction of all these causes is a common underlying plea for us to open our eyes to the bigger picture, to share that human worth which we for ourselves claim as a right, but deprive others of without justification.
The play overall is an intense reminder of horrors towards which we voluntarily turn a deaf ear. It does not aim to downplay the success of those who do make it to the top, but is a call to the privileged to consider those who deserve equal rights, but lack equal opportunity.

Reviews:
Director Arvind Gaur relies on simplicity to deliver his message…music by sangeeta Gaur beautifully woven in the script.this is a play that wakes you up to the reality…the narrative explores the rising anger,,,the play brought forward the importance of role of media in the society…relevant videos of Shoe Throwing Incident transitions between scenes..one of the poignant scenes where 8 reporters recollect the atrocities they witnessed.
-Rohini Kejriwal,Coverage of The Last Salute (Delhi and Kolkata)

The farewell kiss from the Iraqi people -The play has truthfully captured the important part of US atrocities on Iraqi people. The scene of eight-year-old Zahra who was brutally killed by US forces made me cry. Even the scene of the hospital after bombardment where hundreds were shown screaming for help moved my heart. While watching the play i felt that everything was happening again, all the incidents that led up to my doing what i did… performance throughout the play was very sincere…the voice of dissent, oppressed people can stand up, can fight against atrocities… My protest was made because the media, especially the free media of the free world, i mean the western media in particular, reported that the people of Iraq welcomed US forces with flowers… "throwing shoes is better than throwing bombs"...“I am not a Hero; I am a Man in Search of freedom.”
Muntadhar Al Zaidi’s Intv by TOI

The last salute -A play inspired by one of the most jarring moments in world politics.
-NDTV India
IRAQI SHOE THROWER IN DELHI
-Piyali Dasgupta

SHOE-THROWER’S A FOLLOWER OF GANDHI!
About the moment that made him famous, al-Zaidi smiled and said haltingly, “I have been a staunch follower of Gandhiji. Main India ka shukriya karna chahta hun ki mujhe aap logon ne yahaan bulaya aur itna respect diya. I’m happy that my message will now reach more people (through this play). It was a wonderful experience.”
-Delhi Times

Such shoe sha!- A SALUTE FOR LUCKNOW!!
If anything, the play proved to be a testimony that theatre has arrived in Lucknow. And if there’s a good theatre production, audiences will turn up in large numbers. Not surprisingly, the auditorium was filled to capacity…. rousing songs by Faiz interspersed the proceedings…continuous audio-visuals- interesting…
Anjali Chandra

All you need is himmat… Scenes of former US president George W. Bush’s war on terror in Iraq and the suffering of the common man thereof, came alive onstage on Sunday with Mahesh Bhatt’s play, “The Last Salute”…. The song sequences of the play touched a chord with the audience and so did certain scenes which had them break out in applause…. The scenes of US drones bombing Iraqi cities causing widespread death and destruction hit the audience hard and one was heard saying, “I can hardly stop myself from crying. What untold sufferings people have faced for this war.”
Dibyajyoti Chaudhuri
The Times Of India Kolkata

Muntadhar-Al-Zaidi is a hero
Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi, who pioneered a new way of protest by hurling a shoe at US President George Bush, was in the city to watch a play which depicted his life, before and after the incident that changed his life completely.
-Swati Trivedi,NewsX

Al-Zaidi with Pooja Bhatt and Dino Morea gave a standing ovation to the play and hugged Imran Zahid after the completion of the play, saying "Thank You" … moved by people's response to the play.
Parmita Uniyal, Hindustan Times

The red Lettered Salute..The play was well received by Chandigarh Audience,…the city will be treated to more such intellectual Delights…

About Mahesh Bhatt :

Mahesh Bhatt (born on 20 September 1948), is a prominent Indian film director, producer and screenwriter.
Bhatt's early directional career consisted of acclaimed films, such as Arth, Saaransh, Janam, Naam and Zakhm. He was later the writer of numerous commercial films in a range of film genres, from dramas like Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and comedies like Duplicate, though he was mostly recognised for thrillers like Inteha, Jism, Murder and Woh Lamhe. Bhatt began his career as an assistant to Hindi director Raj Khosla. At age 21 he made his debut as a director, with the film Sakat (1970),

[2] this was followed by Manzilein Aur Bhi Hainin 1974. His 1979 film, Lahu Ke Do Rang, starring Shabana Azmi and Vinod Khanna, bagged two Filmfare Awards in 1980.

[3] Though his first major hit came with Arth (1982), when he turned to his personal life for inspiration. Later, he made many more films taking insights from his personal life, where he highlighted personal narratives, ranging from illegitimate birth to extramarital affair and created critically acclaimed films such as Janam (1985) and Naam (1986).

A stand-out film from his earlier period is Saaransh (1984), an exploration of an old couple's anxieties in a universe governed by arbitrary violence, and dramatic films like Kaash (1987), which dealt with real-life family situations with a tragic end.

In 1987 he turned producer, when he set up his own banner Vishesh Films, with his brother Mukesh Bhatt. He went on to become one of the most recognised film directors of the Indian film industry in the coming decade, giving both serious films like Daddy (1989), launching his daughter Pooja Bhatt as a film actress, and Swayam (1991); as well as commercial romantic hits like Awaargi (1990), Aashiqui (1990) and Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991), in which he cast his daughter Pooja with actor Aamir Khan. He next directed Sadak (1991) and won critical acclaim for the films Sir (1993), which saw Pooja Bhatt acting along with Naseeruddin Shah and Criminal (1994). In 1994 he won the National Film Award - Special Jury Award for his film,Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993)

In 1995 he moved to television, then a newly opening up medium in India. He made two TV series, the English language "A Mouthful of Sky" written by Ashok Banker and the popular Hindi language serial "Swabhimaan" scripted by writer Shobha De. Following this, he directed drama films like Dastak (1996), the debut film of actress Sushmita Sen, and Tamanna (1997), and tried his hand at comedy with Duplicate in 1998.
His film, Zakhm (1998), was returned to the censor board because of right-wing pressure critical of its references to the Mumbai riots of 1993.

His last film as director was Kartoos (1999). Thereafter, Bhatt retired a director, and took to screenwriting full-time, churning out stories and screenplays for over twenty films, many of which were box-office successes, like Dushman, Raaz, Murder (2004), Gangster (2006) and lastly Woh Lamhe (2006), based on the life of actress Parveen Babi, and on whom he has also scripted the 1982 film Arth

PRODUCER NOTE

What threatens us most is our ignorance about what is going on in the world around us. The corporate media especially in the news departments, misinform, disinform, and propagandize the public into misguided rages against the wrong enemies.

The Last Salute will bring you face to face with the 'real enemy' of humanity who has been masquerading as an angel of peace . It will hurl you into life an extraordinary brave person who had the audacity to dare the worst tyrant of recent times George W Bush.

Muntadhar al-Zaidi is an Iraqi broadcast journalist who served as a correspondent for Iraqi-owned, Egyptian-based Al-Bagh. As of February 2011, al-Zaidi works with a Lebanese TV channel. On November 16, 2007, al-Zaidi was kidnapped by unknown assailants in Baghdad. He was also previously twice arrested by the United States armed forces. On December 14, 2008, al-Zaidi shouted "This is a farewell kiss from the Iraqi people, you dog" and threw his shoes at then-U.S. president George W. Bush during a Baghdad press conference. Al-Zaidi suffered injuries as he was taken into custody and some sources said he was tortured during his initial detention. There were calls throughout the Middle East to place the shoes in an Iraqi museum,[4] but the shoes were later destroyed by American and Iraqi security forces. On April 7 the sentence was reduced to one year from three years. He was released on 15 September 2009 for good behavior, after serving nine months of the sentence. After his release, Al-Zaidi was treated for injuries and later said he planned to "build orphanages, a children's hospital, and medical and orthopedic centers offering free treatment and manned by Iraqi doctors and medical staff.

Asmita theatre's street play Bhrashtachar in Greater Noida

Asmita theatre's street play Bhrashtachar (Corruption) directed by Arvind Gaur on 15th January at the opening Ceremony of 2nd All India Royal City Royal League(u-16) Cricket Tournament YMCA, Greater Noida. The Tournament will give an exposure and a big platform to the budding cricketers to prove themselves in 6 league matches. the tournament is approved by the uttar Pradesh Cricket Association.

About the play- In this play we try to aware the audience effect of corruption in our daily social and political life. ...This play is not just a play it’s a social awareness initiative from our side because we believe theatre can change, create awareness and can be used for betterment of society. In the play we show the pain of a common man, the struggle one faces because of corruption. We believe that if we want a change in society we should be prepared for a dialogue. Our Indian political system has become synonymous with Corruption. How does Corruption affect our Daily life? Well, the common man has to run from pillar to post to get his small jobs done, jobs like obtaining a driving license, passport, water connection, school admission, basic medical facilities. Corruption deep rooted in our system so badly that he is forced to pay bribes during birth and obtaining Death certificates. In our play we depict an Auction where we show corrupt system its social-economical practicesWe have a Great Indian Auction taking place all over the country. At this Auction the Indian system offers you everything under the Blue Sky. One can buy- Politicians Integrity, Houses given to war widows,Coffins of Kargil soldiers and even the Judicialsystem is effected by corruption.

Govt agencies are ineffective to control the corruption in the system. Some corrupt politicians misuse their powers and arm twist the system to their ownbenefits. Inspite of the Corruption/Criminal charges not only they roam scott free but also manage to reach the parliament and further dupe the common man.The common man has accepted corruption as part of their life and adjusted to live with it.

Its been 64 yrs since we got our Independence.India is shining but the picture on the other side of the coin is ugly.Poverty is widespread in India, with the nation estimated to have a third of the world's poor. According to a 2005 World Bank estimate, 41.6% of the total Indian population falls below the international poverty line of US$ 1.25 a day.The 2011 Global Hunger Index (GHI) Report ranked India 15th, amongst leading countries with hunger situation. It also places India amongst the three countries where the GHI between 1996 and 2011 went up from 22.9 to 23.7% and it is here that we have scams like Uttar Pradesh Food Grain Scam- 2 Lakh crore, 2G Scam worth Rs-176 lakh crore: Commonwealth Games Scam – 60,000 crs and many more.

Our existing judicial system does not have a strong law against Corruption. We need a strong law which
the Jan Lokpal bill proposes. The Lokpal Bill proposes to speed up the trial process of the corrupt, freezing their bank A/C’s and confiscating their property. It proposes to deal with Corruption in our country at all levels. We want the Janlok pal Bill to be passed in the parliament. We hope for better life and a clean system of our future coming generation. It’s NOW or NEVER

Director Arvind Gaur’s new play, "I Will Not Cry", solo act by Lushin Dubey,in Jaipur

Director Arvind Gaur’s new play,
"I Will Not Cry",
solo act by Lushin Dubey
directed & scripted by Arvind Gaur
focusses on the issue of increasing number of child deaths in our country.

‘I WILL NOT CRY’
solo play by Lushin Dubey,
directed & scripted by Arvind Gaur
on 20th dec at jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur at 6.30pm
presented by Save the Children
the play is an exceptional blend of theatre and multimedia, highlighting the issue of child survival ...through satire and music excerpts.it will bring alive the sad truth of millions of unnecessary deaths of children in our country. It hopes to evoke our collective responsibility, as a nation, to act together.

Director's Note -
“The child deaths in India are most alarming and shocking situation. India has unofficially become the world’s child death capital, over 5,000 children die in the country every day ,due to totally preventable causes like diarrhoea, pneumonia and birth related complications.Every 15 seconds, a kid is dying and over four lakh newborns die within the first 24 hours of birth every year, which is the highest anywhere in the world,But sadly and shockingly, this is not a priority for us.The priorities of our economic policies are changing and children figure nowhere there. Schemes, plans and funds are there but they don't reach their destination.Ultimately, it all boils down to corruption.

The objective of this the play is not just to stir and sensitise the audience about to the shocking and shameful number of child deaths in our country, but to also alert them to introspect on their social responsibility towards the issues,”

There are dirty roads, spit marks, random garbage, urine, vulgar graffiti and over...flowing sewers at every nook and corner.Who is responsible for it ? - we ? Govt. bodies ? or lack of civic sense ? or our casual attitude for our surrounding ? Using 'everybody does it' and ‘what difference can I alone make’ is an excuse and only an excuse. The action has to start from "I " only. If every individual does... his or her own bit, he or she can definitely make a huge difference and can lead to change. It is easy to pin everything on the government, but people must first question themselves and their own civic sense. Roads and our streets are not dirty because nobody cleaned it, but because somebody dirtied it in the first place.
And thus we as socially responsible theatre actors with' Lets do it Delhi' are taking a step forward towards this goal through the medium of relevant theatre. So join us in this social initiative.
" be the change you want to see "- Gandhi ji.

"I Will Not Cry" - solo act by Lushin Dubey directed by Arvind Gaur

Director Arvind Gaur’s new play, "I Will Not Cry", solo act by Lushin Dubey focusses on the issue of increasing number of child deaths in our country.

‘I WILL NOT CRY’
solo play by Lushin Dubey,
directed & scripted by Arvind Gaur
on 23rd nov at 6pm at Sri Ram Centre, Safdar Hashmi Marg,Mandi House.
presented by Save the Children
the play is an exceptional blend of theatre and multimedia, highlighting the issue of child survival ...through satire and music excerpts.it will bring alive the sad truth of millions of unnecessary deaths of children in our country.

Street play "Corruption" directed by Arvind Gaur at Indian Habitat Centre

Bhrastachar street play directed by Arvind Gaur
from 22nd Nov 2011 to 24th Nov at 8.30pm
Indian Habitat Center, Lodhi road, Delhi, New Delhi, India
performed by Asmita Theatre Group.
Short and Sweet festival 2011
About the play-
In this play we try to aware the audience effect of corruption in our daily social and political life. This play is not just a play it’s a social awareness initiative from our side because we believe theatre can change, create awareness and can be used for betterment of society.
In our play we depict an Auction where we show corrupt system its social-economical practices
We have a Great Indian Auction taking place all over the country. At this Auction the Indian system offers you everything under the Blue Sky. One can buy- Politicians Integrity, Houses given to war widows, Coffins of Kargil soldiers and even the Judicial system is effected by corruption.

Govt agencies are ineffective to control the corruption in the system. Some corrupt politicians misuse their powers and arm twist the system to their own benefits. Inspite of the Corruption/Criminal charges not only they roam scott free but also manage to reach the parliament and further dupe the common man.The common man has accepted corruption as part of their life and adjusted to live with it.

Its been 64 yrs since we got our Independence. Agreed India is shining but the picture on the other side of the coin is ugly. Poverty is widespread in India, with the nation estimated to have a third of the world's poor. According to a 2005 World Bank estimate, 41.6% of the total Indian population falls below the international poverty line of US$ 1.25 a day.
The 2011 Global Hunger Index (GHI) Report ranked India 15th, amongst leading countries with hunger situation.

We need a strong law which the Jan Lokpal bill proposes.
